Visit to Desal+ Living Lab Desalination Testbed Facilities
Thursday June 23rd

The Canary Islands are a great laboratory and world reference in the design and operation of all the existing desalination technologies, with more than half a century of experience and the exploitation of more than 300 desalination plants.

Besides, the Archipelago, along with Madeira, Cape Verde, Senegal and Mauritania, share an excellent availability of natural resources (sun, wind & sea). Desalination infrastructure, natural resources and experience are opportunities to be exploited in this Atlantic area under R&D and innovation objectives.

The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), the Universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Laguna, the Ocean Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) and the regional Research Agency have created an open Desalination Living Lab platform (https://www.desalinationlab.com). This infrastructure consists of a coordinated group of public and private entities with existing plants and R&D infrastructure that cooperates in applied research on desalination and water–energy nexus. In this way, the Canary
Islands become in an accessible place to carry out R&D&i in desalination with on/off-shore testbed facilities and high-qualified researchers to support your project.

ITC facilities in Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), with approximately 110.000 m2, are an ideal platform for testing RE‚Äźdesalination systems.

The Ocean Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) is a Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure that has as one of its main work lines the promotion and development of renewable marine energies. PLOCAN has a unique test site in Europe, a 23 km2 marine area on the Northeast coast of Gran Canaria where cutting-edge marine technologies of a different nature are tested in real and monitored conditions, with the greatest environmental and sustainability guarantees.
